Elizabeth Hauke led a workshop session at this year’s Imperial College Education Day, held on 16th March. The theme was transformative learning and the workshop was titled ‘Holding Your Nerve: Strategies for Implementing Transformative Experiences in Higher Education’.
After a keynote presentation from Professor Ronald Barnett, we heard from the Student Union about student perceptions of transformative learning.
The workshop looked at Mezirow’s definition and process for transformation, and then considered the ‘necessary pain’ of transformation – both for students and instructors. We also looked at ideas relating to cognitive load and considered ways to manage this.
